Doin' the iPod Shuffle!

Got my brand-spanking new iPod Shuffle today! Wah-hey!

It is indeed the most tiny little thing, ever, bar non .. except for things that are smaller .. but aren't actually as good.

I'll shut up now.

Anyway, everyone who's seen it exclaims: 'Is that it?!'

Well, yeah! What the hell do you want? A portable music player the size of a golf bag?

So, I can now go out and listen to my music while I'm jogging / cycling and either, 1) fall over and crush the damn thing, or 2) fall over and cover the damn thing in mud, or a combination of points 1 & 2.

The simplicity is sublime and the quality is flawless.

I am suitably impressed...

how tiny!

..Didn't know it had it's own capacity; though it was a 'remote' for the iPod..

It's the 1 gigabyte version.

There's a nice little trick that iTunes does: you can choose to move songs onto your iPod at a lower bit rate, which is done on the fly.

So you end up with slightly less quality but more songs.

Currently, I've got 247 songs on my iPod, which isn't bad going...

In the not so distant future, cellphone, computer, PDA, iPod, Radio, Television (plus some extra ones, like barcode snanner, credit-cards, remote-control, etc.) will all merge. I will buy one when that happens :-D.

You might want to read some of my articles from the first two weeks in January.

I touch on convergence and the like...

It's just the smallest thing.

Some people have criticized the lack of a screen. But I think Apple got this one right.

To get an LCD screen to display text large enough to read, you'd end up with some song names longer than the actual device, which is obviously a little silly.

Plus, the process of skipping a song is just the same, the only difference being a screen would let you know visually that a song was coming along that you didn't want to listen to.

And having a screen would just be extra cost and lower battery life for little or no material advantage...

it's the cutest thing I've ever seen. Makes my 40 gigger look monolithic! Mind you don't lose it now... ;)

I got a 20GB iPod for Christmas and it's great. I love the idea of the Shuffle, but I like to be able to carry files around with me, too. Plus I don't jog.

Hi Timmargh, and thanks for posting.

Given the iPod Shuffle is relatively cheap, I can't really complain too much .. but, being able to store a couple of playlists on there would have been a bonus.

I think in time, it will happen. I think the iPod Shuffle will get a screen, bigger storage, option to save multiple playlists and Bluetooth...

Hi Angry Gordy!

Thanks for posting.

Well, there is that, but it's not like the rest of the iPod family is going to sit idle, now is it?

You'll see new features emerge, they always do.

In time, a colour screen will become standard on the regular iPods...

Apparently, Motorola are going to be rolling out the new iTunes mobile phone on Thursday.

The rumour is, Apple have asked that the song storage capacity be pared down so not to compete with the iPod Shuffle...
